The Month of Mary - 39 Favorite Marian Items

May is the month of motherhood -- Mother's Day, the the season of the beginning of new life, and the month traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. May as the month of Mary began at the end of the 13th century, in the Church's effort to Christianize the secular feasts which were took place at that time of the year. Some sources credit St. Philip Neri with the popularizing May as the Month of Mary.

In the 1950's the custom of crowning a statue of the Virgin Mary with flowers became popular in the United States and Britain. In the Eastern churches the crowning of the Virgin Mary was associated with adding ornamentation to a Marian icon.
