Our Lady of Kazan is honored as the guardian and patroness of the Russian city, Kazan, and of all Russia. This iconic image was originally said to have been discovered in 1579 after a Marian apparition. Since then, copies of this Virgin Mary icon have been displayed in cathedrals all over Russian and the world.
This icon is painted on 1/4-inch non-tempered artist's hardboard measuring 11" x 14". The artist used matte fluid acrylics which replicate classic egg tempera. The background is gold leaf. The icon has a protective artist's grade acrylic varnish. Created in the year 1988, the painting includes the artist's "signature" in tiny letters: "by Simeon 1988," as is traditional in iconography.
